Opal L. Stevens

Opal Lea Stevens, 90, of French Lick, Indiana, entered into eternal rest on November 28th, 2023 at her home surrounded by family and loved ones.   

She was born in Crystal, Indiana on November 5th, 1933 to Robert and Fern (Beatty) Weikert. Opal married the love of her life Ernest Stevens on June 24th, 1961 at Crystal Community Church.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Judith Weikert, and brother-in-law Dennis “Butch” Cave. 

Opal was a 1951 graduate of French Lick High School. She graduated from Oakland City College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and furthered her education with a Master’s Degree from Indiana University. Opal taught at different schools over the years in both Illinois and Indiana before she returned to the Valley. She retired from Springs Valley Community Schools in 1994.  

She was a member of the Crystal Community Church where she played both the piano and organ. She enjoyed taking pictures with her camera and loved keeping up to date on all things whether that be her getting on Facebook on her Ipad or talking on the phone for hours in her big comfy chair. She spent a lot of her time reading the Word of God, playing hymns and singing with anyone who was willing. But what Opal cherished the most of all was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  

Opal is survived by her husband Ernest Stevens of French Lick, Indiana, her children Debra Stevens Fix (James) of Bloomington, Indiana and Benjamin Stevens (June) of Springtown, Texas, her sisters Ruth Ann Emmons (William) and Alta Cave of Hillham, Indiana, her grandchildren Joshua, Joseph (Jackalynn) and Jessica Fix, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved also survive.  

Funeral Ceremony 

A funeral ceremony will be conducted by Pastor Mike Stout on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Crystal Community Church with burial to follow at Crystal Community Cemetery.  

Visitation  

Visitation will be on Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at Crystal Community Church.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Crystal Community Cemetery, ℅ Melvin Jones, 9097 N. 900 E., Dubois, Indiana 47527.
