Patrick (Pat) Leonard Smith, 78 of French Lick, Indiana passed away on July 23rd, 2024 at Springs Valley Meadows in French Lick after a 16-month battle with brain cancer.
Pat was born on February 1st, 1946 to John Patrick and Bernice Elizabeth (Nutley) Smith in San Francisco, CA wher he spent his youth and childhood. A Vietnam Veteran, he enlisted in the Navy in 1963 and proudly served for 21 years before retiring as a Master Chief Engineman. Having completed his Navy service as a top-notch Recruiter, her retired in 1983 in South Bend, Indiana.
Pat married fellow San Franciscan and the love of his life, MaryAnne Teeter on April 9th, 1966. Together, they shared 58 years of marriage and raised four children, Mary Catherine Patricia Jurczyk, Patricia Marie Smith, John Francis Smith and Kevin Patrick Smith.
After his retirement from the Navy, Pat began a second career in the Maintenance Department of the power plant at the University of Notre Dame, where he worked 24 years until his retirement in 2008 and retired as Director of Maintenance.
Pat and MaryAnne moved from South Bend to their home in French Lick, Indiana, where Pat called on his boyhood love of animals and ranch life from spending summers on their family ranch in Yuba County, California. He basked in the opportunity to fish, raise and care for a variety of animals, and enjoy nature in a quieter setting.
He was a faithful Catholic all his life and gladly served as a Eucharistic Minister, handyman, and Parish Council member in his local parish, Our Lady of the Springs. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathleen McCallum. He is survived by his wife MaryAnne Smith, brother Michael Smith, daughter Mary Catherine (Michael) Jurczyk, daughter Patricia (Brian) Smith, son John (Anji) Smith, son Kevin (Florence) Smith and eight grandchildren, Brianna Smith, Samantha Smith, Thomas Jurczyk, Annika Jurczyk, Kevin Smith, Jr., Austin Smith, Zachary Smith and Aubrie Smith. He made a lasting impact on many others, had countless friends, and never met a stranger!
Funeral mass will be officiated by Fr. Randall (Randy) Summers at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 2nd, 2024. Burial will be held immediately following at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in French Lick. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following burial services at the parish hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Our Lady of the Springs Catholic Church, 8796 W. State Road 56, French Lick, IN 47432.
