Shelley Opson

December 9, 1964 — April 9, 2026

Paoli

Shelley Opson, 61, of Paoli, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 9th, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born in Jasper, Indiana on December 9th, 1964 to Bennie and Linda (Land) Beyers.

Shelley married the love of her life, Paul Opson, on April 20th, 2002. Their marriage was one of deep devotion, laughter, and true partnership. Together, they built a life rooted in love, trust, and unwavering support for one another. Whether in quiet everyday moments or life’s greatest challenges, they stood side by side. Paul was her constant companion, her greatest supporter, and her best friend, and the love they shared was evident to all who knew them.

A proud 1983 graduate of Springs Valley High School, Shelley went on to pursue her calling in nursing at Aristotle Nursing School in Indianapolis, where she graduated in the top five percent of her class – a reflection of both her intelligence and deep compassion for others. She began her long and dedicated career in healthcare at Bloomington Hospital as a phlebotomist, while spending time tending to her love of nature as a gardener at the West Baden Dome. She later continued her career working alongside Dr. Marion Hagan, where she remained a trusted and caring presence until her retirement.

Shelley lived her life with energy and joy. She was an avid pool player and took great pride in winning several tournaments, always bringing both skill and spirit to the table. She was also a fiercely loving and protective big sister to her two younger brothers, a role she cherished deeply. Her friendships were lifelong and meaningful – so close, in fact, that many often mistook her dear friends for family.

Above all else, Shelley was a devoted and extraordinary mother. She welcomed her son Dylan in 1990 and her daughter Hannah in 2002, and through her marriage to Paul, she lovingly embraced her stepdaughter Jessica as her own. Her children were the center of her world, and she poured her heart into raising them with strength, kindness, and unconditional love.

Shelley’s greatest joy in recent years was being a grandmother. She was deeply attentive, endlessly proud, and found immeasurable happiness in every moment spent with her grandchildren, Weston, Anna and Eleanor. Her love for them was boundless and will live in their hearts forever.

She is survived by her loving husband, Paul Opson of Paoli, Indiana; her mother, Linda Beyers of Paoli, Indiana; her brother, Benji Beyers; her children, Hannah (Sebastian) Castle of Paoli, Indiana, Jessica (Charles) of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Dylan (Shannon) of Bedford, Indiana; her cherished grandchildren, Weston, Anna, and Eleanor; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless dear friends who were like family to her.

Shelley was preceded in death by her father, Bennie Beyers; her brother, Rusty Beyers, and her nephew Zach.

Shelley will be remembered for her gentle heart, strength, sense of humor, and the deep love she gave so freely to those around her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the family she cherished, and the memories that will forever be held close by all who knew and loved her.
